Biography

Dr. Berger received his Ph.D. from the University of Miami in Florida in 1971. He had training at the University of Miami Health Clinic, at Jackson Memorial Hospital, at an outpatient mental health center, and at the Veteran's Hospital in Miami on the only in-patient unit with male and female veterans. His internship was at Camarillo State Hospital in California where he had rotations on the child unit, on the adolescent unit, and on the mental retardation unit. He was selected as Intern of the Year.

He served on the faculty of the University of Southern California from 1971-1978. He was primarily responsible for the graduate course in Psychological Assessment and taught and supervised psychotherapy courses and training, as well Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations. From 1972-1982 he served as a Consulting Psychologist for the Counseling Section of the Occupational Health Service of Los Angeles County and was the Chief Occupational Health Psychologist for the County's largest Department, the Department of Health Services from 1978-1982. He has taught graduate psychology courses for the California School of Professional Psychology, the California Graduate Institute, the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California including courses on Law and Ethics, Consultation and Supervision, Psychotherapy and several Forensic Psychology courses. He is now a Full Professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Anaheim, CA campus. He has more than 200 invited addresses, workshops conducted, presentations at State, Regional, International Conventions, and at APA Conventions, as well as peer reviewed journal and book chapter publications.

Dr. Berger received his psychology license in 1972. He received the ABPP diploma in Clinical Psychology in 1984. He also has Diplomates in Psychopharmacology, Forensic Psychology and Serious Mental Illness. He conducts a general psychology practice, treating the entire age range. He has specializations with children and with neuropsychological assessment. He has been involved in a number of forensic areas including criminal cases, personal injury cases and the defense of mental health professionals in malpractice cases and Board complaint cases.

Dr. Berger has received awards and honors from the Orange County Psychological Association, the California Psychological Association and from the Association for the Advancement of Psychology, which was psychology's national Political Action Committee (PAC), for his contributions and political advocacy on behalf of professional psychology. He was one of the 8 individually named psychologist plaintiffs in the famous CAPP v. Rank case in which the California Supreme Court affirmed the California statute that granted independent hospital practice rights for Clinical Psychologists.

Please describe your teaching philosophy.

I bellieve that students are like flowers - they have a beauty - both inner and outer in one way or another and that they need nurturing and occassionally some pruning.

Please provide a statement or philosophy regarding the practice of psychology.

I think that psychology is a field of study regarding who people are and why.

Why did you choose to enter the field of psychology?

Early on, it seemed clear that I had a talent for psychology as an academic field and as a profession.

What advice would you give to a student entering The Chicago School?

Prepare yourself academically, emotionally and in regard to your sources of support.
