Dr Zarse is a Full Professor in the Forensic Department. She earned her doctorate from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and completed her internship at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She served as Chief Psychologist at two federal prisons, and the Director of Inmate Administration at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, the maximum-security military prison. Clinical responsibilities included psychological evaluations, assessing risk of violence, individual and group therapy, leading hostage negotiation teams, staff training, and conducting violation hearings for maximum security military prisoners.
In addition to teaching graduate classes such as Violence & Risk Assessment, Psychology of Terrorism, and Hostage Negotiation, Dr. Zarse developed a course on Israel, focusing on terrorism, trauma, and resilience, culminating in a 10-day study abroad trip. Dr. Zarse received several Distinguished Faculty awards for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Public Service, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996. She was twice selected as a Carnegie Scholar.
Specialty areas of clinical practice include consulting and training with law enforcement and legal agencies, such as the FBI, United States Army Military Police, and the Chicago Bar. Dr. Zarse is a consultant to the FBI's Countering Violent Extremism section, with Secret Clearance, and is one of three experts on a team awarded a grant for Countering Violent Extremism by the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Zarse is resource staff for the FBI Hostage Negotiation Certification Course and the FBI Interview & Interrogation Course. Dr. Zarse presents at national and international forums. She provides expert commentary in media interviews and full-length documentaries.
