This online certificate program is a three-course sequence at the master’s level for students and professionals, in the U.S. and abroad, who want to better care for and respond to the psychosocial trauma caused by crises and disasters.

Natural and human-caused crises and disasters are frequent and severe worldwide. There is a compelling need for individuals who are well-versed both technically and culturally in crisis response situations. Such competencies are essential to successfully navigating diverse cultures, economic, educational, and political systems, national historical narratives, religions, and even geographic zones.

Should you complete this online certificate, you will be eligible to apply to our M.A. International Psychology program and apply for transfer credit, provided that admissions criteria are met.

Sample Courses

Process of Acculturation, Immigration and Refugee Status

This course examines the process of acculturation, assimilation and adaptation required by the current global state of voluntary and involuntary migration, immigration, refugee and asylum seeking status. Influences of sociocultural, psychological and self-identity models will be used to inform culturally appropriate interventions and supportive systemic and organizational development. The importance of assessment and exploration of the role of resilience for a variety of health and mental health outcomes will be critically examined.

Culture Centered Interventions - Program Design and Evaluations

This course will require students to evaluate the components that should be included in the development of cultural programs and/or interventions. Students will learn to design and evaluate the efficacy of cultural centered interventions in diverse global settings. The course will focus on the resource availability to construct interventions in underdeveloped and developing countries as they are most impacted due to weak or non-existent infrastructures which support survival and often preclude return to functioning environments demonstrated in resource and developed nations. Students will be required to apply these concepts and outcome evaluations to case studies of current scenarios.

Crisis Response - Trauma and Crisis Intervention

This course explores relevant theories in current evidence-based research, Western and non-Western practices related to the contribution of various types of trauma originated by man-made and environmental causes. Particular consideration will be paid to the multiple forms of trauma and crisis commonly identified in vulnerable, underserved and at risk populations. Throughout the course work, students will develop a substantial understanding of how trauma and psychopathologies are socially and culturally constructed in diverse cultures exploring unique aspects of working with individuals and proposing ethical and culturally competent interventions to assist populations that have experienced trauma around the world.
