In order to keep pace with innovations that have come with the expansion of online learning and training, the Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning is designed to prepare educators, trainers, and other professionals to work effectively in remote settings.
This 9-credit hour, online certificate will encompass graduate-level coursework, exploring online technologies, understanding course design, and identifying critical design issues to better inform the development of programs that are accessible, inclusive, and effective.
Through transformative learning experiences, students in the program will gain the expertise to:
- Implement best practices of online teaching and learning.
- Align their courses with learning outcomes.
- Incorporate Universal Design principles into their curriculum to maximize the learning of all students.
- Evaluate innovative technologies to integrate into their courses.
- Consider issues of accessibility and equity for underserved populations.
All nine credits of this certificate are transferable to the M.A. Applied Psychology degree program upon completion.

- The general guideline for admission is a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.8 or above on a 4.0 scale.

Sample Courses
Online Learning Communities and Pedagogies
This course provides a foundation of the best practices of online instruction and learning. Students will apply delivery frameworks for developing effective online courses that emphasize student engagement, classroom management, and learning theories into the design and delivery of online courses. This course will provide an overview of identifying critical design issues, engaging in effective instructional approaching, and evaluating online learning experiences. Students will complete a capstone project focused on developing an online learning module.
Online Course Design and Assessment
This course focuses on the foundational concepts of assessment in online settings. Students will examine online learning assessments and their alignment with measurable learning outcomes. This course will assist students in their application of accessible instructional content and the inclusion of Universal Design for Learning as a framework for online course development. Students will expand their Online Learning Communities and Pedagogies capstone project to encompass appropriate assessments and Universal Design for Learning components.
Online Technologies for Learning Engagement
This course explores innovative technologies and digital tools that promote student learning. Students will explore a diverse range of technologies that can be integrated into online learning contexts and apply technology to create technology-enhanced content. Students will also investigate frameworks for meaningful technology integration and explore current innovative learning technology trends. Students will incorporate innovative technologies into their cumulative capstone project in which they will produce a finalized learning module.
